甘薯专家们一致认为，“83—2146”新品系有四个特点：一是产量高。多年试验结果表明，它比现有推广品种徐薯18增产20％左右，高产田块单产达到4000公斤以上。二是品质优。鲜薯肉细脆嫩、乳白色、水分足、味甘甜，有较浓的水果风味，肉质不易褐变，口感好似荸荠。品质检测结果：薯块烘干率24.2％，淀粉含量16.15％，蛋白质含量4.34％，可溶性糖合量4.1％，每100克鲜薯含维生素C21毫克。三是抗性强。薯苗栽插成活率高，发苗快，长势壮，结薯早，耐渍、抗旱，较抗根腐病和黑斑病，适应性广。四是无污染。
